CATAMARAN A CLASS
"Italian Chanpionship"
The third times for Marcolini

"The Italian Championship, class A, was just before the Festival this year: the catamarans which clock up terrific speeds as they zip across the water sometimes faster than the wind itself. Out of the 30 competitors, it was the Italian Champion, Francesco Marcolini from Genoa who made the biggest impact, having already taken 5th overall position at the latest World Championships held in Melbourne, Australia

40_216.jpg (20035 byte)The Italian Championship, class A, was just before the Festival this year: the catamarans which clock up terrific speeds as they zip across the water sometimes faster than the wind itself. Out of the 30 competitors, it was the Italian Champion, Francesco Marcolini from Genoa who made the biggest impact, having already taken 5th overall position at the latest World Championships held in Melbourne, Australia. The undisputed champion asserted his title by winning 5 of the 8 races that made up this regatta. In second place was V. Petruzzi who gave the best performance of his fellow club mates Casadei and Di Battisti, all from the Cesenatico Sailing Club. This is the Club which, due to its competence in this discipline, boasts the largest fleet in Italy and is among the most active in the world. For the first 7 races, there was a light, 4 to 6 knot wind which increased during the final race, reaching 10 knots. The fastest catamarans were thus able to give some spectacular performances.
The prize giving, which took place during the Opening Ceremony of the Windsurf World Festival, was a particularly moving moment. On the huge stage set up on the beach, the warm applause from the tens of thousands of spectators was the most welcome prize for the competitors. Presenting the awards were Mimmo Rotella, councillor for Tourism, Sport and Entertainment from the ‘Sicilian Regional Council’ and Fabrizio Bignardelli, Councillor for the Palermo Province.
