RICCARDO GIORDANO SCIVOLA IN 14 POSIZIONE
Aaron Macintosh ha ceduto il comando provvisorio del Mondiale
di windsurf al nuovo alll'australiano Lars Kleppich. Barbara Kendall allunga il vantaggio
sull'australiana Jessica Crisp. Tre le prove da disputare per l'assegazione delle medaglie
Lars Kleppich takes the lead
During the first heat of the day on Thursday, Aaron McIntosh missed
a few of his cues, which cost him the lead in the Mondial AOM in
favour of Lars Kleppich of Australia.
Alessandra Sensini nonostante il ritiro nell'ultima prova ha guadagnato tre
posizioni nella classifica generale con un punteggio che la rimette in ballo per l'alta
classifica. Al comando al comando la neozelandese Barbara Kendall che grazie alle ultime
prove disputate ha aumentato il distacco dalle australiane Jessica Crisp e Natasha Stugers
(seconda e terza). Nella classe maschile l'azzurro Riccardo Giordano, penalizzato dalla
quarantunesima posizione ottenuta nell'ottava prova, è scivolato in quattordicesima
posizione.
 
Quattro ancora le prove che i finalisti dovranno ancora disputare per
l'asseganzione delle medaglie del Campionato Mondiale in corso di svolgimento a Numea
(Nuova Caledonia). Al comando della classifica provvisoria maschile è salito l'esperto
australiano Lars Kleppish che non ha vinto nessuna delle otto prove disputate ma è stato
regolare nei piazzamenti.
Gli altri italiani in gara nel gruppo della "Silver Fleet" Paco Wirz ed
Alessandro Alberti si trovano rispettivamente diciassettesimo e quarantunesimo.
Al campionato organizzato dalla Federazione Francese della Vela sono presenti i migliori
atleti del circuito mondiale della vela olimpica in rappresentanza di 40 nazioni. Tre le
prove in programma per l'assegnazione delle medaglie di uomini e donne.
Lars Kleppich takes the lead
During the first heat of the day on Thursday, Aaron McIntosh missed
a few of his cues, which cost him the lead in the Mondial AOM in
favour of Lars Kleppich of Australia.
"It's not by winning one race that you can become World Champion,
but by staying consistently strong over the eleven events" says Lars
Kleppich of Australia; as bronze medallist in the Barcelona Olympics, he knows
what he is talking about. At the end of four days and eight heats, he now wears
the leader's yellow jersey. So far, Lars has made no mistakes. On Thursday, he
held his position steady with a 6th and a 3rd place in the day's two heats, raced in
a light 8 to 12 knot breeze.
One mistake too many for McIntosh
"I'm feeling really good right now. With the help of my coach, I have
been training specifically for this event and for Sydney 2000" adds
Lars Kleppich, who took advantage of a slip by Aaron McIntosh to take the lead in
the Mondial AOM. Due to a series of mistakes during the first heat of the day
(including two falls!), the '97 and '98 world champion found himself in 3rd place. A
bad day for one who may have already lost his title, while his Australian challenger
is gathering confidence.
Nikos Kaklamanakis improves his standing
"Lars will be very hard to beat, but with three heats to go, anything
could happen... " says McIntosh, who intends to keep hoping till the end. A
fresh challenge for the New Zealander who, after this black Thursday, finds himself
in third place overall, behind Tony Philp of Fiji and with Nikos Kaklamanakis hard
on his heels.The Atlanta Olympics champion, with two good races (2nd and 4th) to
his credit, is making his bid for a place on the podium, along with Marcos Galvan of
Argentina, now in sixth position.
Barbara Kendall within sight of success
Finishing in second place each time, the New Zealander is off and
running. She is well on her way to hold on to her world title. As the
days go by, Barbara Kendall has remained very strong. With two
second places in two consecutive races, the Barcelona Olympic
champion is inching ever closer to the gold.
Meanwhile, nothing is certain yet regarding the other two places on the podium,
and Faustine Merret of France, building on her successes of the previous day,
dominated the first heat. Her luck didn't hold in the second race, where she missed
her start. Says Faustine, runner up in the '99 European Championships: "I had
made an excellent start, but the race was recalled; I took too long to get back to
the starting line and ended up at the tail end of the pack. Considering, I feel I didn't
do too badly, having caught up as far as the tenth place by the finish line".
Faustine is now hard on the heels of Natasha Sturges and Jessica Crisp of
Australia.
